Harnessing data-driven storytelling for more impactful content design

Thursday 21 March 2024, 03:15 - 04:30 UTC, Stage 1

A picture paints a thousand words…and sometimes a strong data visualisation or infographic is the best content solution for your intended message and audience.

“What’s needed is a framework for understanding the different kinds of stories that data and analytics can tell. If you don’t know what kind of story you want to tell, you probably won’t tell a good one.”

– Harvard Business Review

All organisations have a wealth of data to draw upon to create engaging visualisations and infographics, but knowing where to start is a challenge. There are dozens of different chart and graph formats – each with their own quirks – and endless possibilities for their application.

This interactive session has been designed for content professionals who want to harness data to tell more impactful stories, but do not have a background in statistics.

Participants will be introduced to a powerful new framework to identify data-rich storytelling opportunities across print and digital, and collaborate more effectively with colleagues to produce unique, compelling, and accessible content.

A tool to takeaway

You’ll be introduced to the eight key plots of data-driven storytelling, and understand how to apply this to your own content, and “pair” the right storyline with the right chart, graph, or infographic.

  1. Understand the crucial difference between #dataviz and infographics, and why they should be part of your content toolkit.

  2. Discover the eight key plots of data-driven storytelling.

  3. Embrace visual storytelling opportunities, while ensuring accessibility.
