Responsible and sustainable content practices

Rhia Weston - Chair (UK)

Nicholas Paries (Portugal)

David Salisbury (Switzerland)

Alisa Bonsignore (USA)

Joyce Peralta (Canada)

With increasing urgency regarding the world's approach to energy production and consumption, in recent years greater scrutiny has turned towards the impact of digital technologies on the planet.

While 20 years ago, digital content might have been the "green" alternative to print, now the volume of digital content that we produce is not proving to be the sustainable environmental solution we hoped for.

In this session our panellists will explore the impact of content practices on the environment, and the ways in which we can become smarter and more responsible for the cost to our planet.

Rhia Weston (Chair) is a content designer by trade and an environmentalist by necessity. She is a Service Owner at the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and previously managed websites in the higher education sector and for charities.

After working in content for over 10 years, Rhia realised the digital world contributes to climate change through its dependence on vast quantities of energy. She realised she could do something about it and play her part in tackling climate change, so she speaks and writes on the topic of digital sustainability to raise awareness.

In her free time, Rhia volunteers with various sustainability groups, grows her own food, and runs, swims or cycles.
